On Wednesday May 14th the Santa Ana winds were blowing strong and the weather was hot! The Nanny Elena was at Aviara park with the kids and texted me a photo of smoke she saw by the park. I told her to throw the kids in the car and take the coast home. A minute later Craig called and said there were flames on Palomar Airport Road, he rushed home immediately. The kids made it safely back with the Nanny and she raced home to her daughter Milana who was being evacuated form her school in San Elijo. It turned out the fire was RIGHT next to the park they were at so thank God they made it back safely and without getting trapped there. Fires were popping up all over San Diego County with at least 19 individual fires and ten of then receiving names, in Carlsbad, San Marcos, Pendelton, Encinitas and Rancho Bernardo and Escondido. The one by our house was called the Poinsettia Fire. The 5 freeway was closed and thousands of homes were evacuated (11,600 in Carlsbad). The Rossittos were evacuated from their home in Bressi Ranch and came and stayed with us. It was nice being with good friends in such a scary situation, the kids had a great time playing together and thankfully we never got evacuated or lost power.
The Poinsettia Fire destroyed 8 homes, a condo complex and two commercial buildings.
